Banjalučki biskup Franjo Komarica posjetio Sjedinjene Američke Države

komarica-1219121Washington (D.C.)

Medju Hrvatima i Bosancima u New Yorku

Ćirila i Metoda i Sv. Rafaela u New Yorku.

Visit of Bishop Franjo Komarica to Harvard: “Developed Europe and the US Should Not Abandon Us”

By Josip Bogovic

komarica-1219126The speech given by Bishop Komarica at the Harvard Club began with his family’s roots being firmly planted in Banja Luka (located within Republika Srbska in Bosnia & Hercegovina - BiH) and BiH in general for over 300 years. The statistics that followed Bishop’s Komarica’s impassioned, well structured and articulated speech were disturbing especially regarding the Croatian population living in Republica Srpska. “I represent and fight for the improvement of the human condition in general and those that have been marginalized, as have been the Croatian population living the greater BiH and Banja Luka specifically. Over 2.2 million people left BiH during and after the war. There were 800 thousand Catholics before the war and now there are 440 thousand.  There were 220 thousand Catholics in Republika Srpska before the war and now there are 9 thousand. The aim of the Serbia authorities was to drive us out even though my family has been in Banja Luka for over 300 years. They destroyed or damaged 95 percent of our churches in Banja Luka. In BiH we now have a quasi state with the application of law and justice being distributed unevenly and with extreme prejudice. If there is to be peace this cannot stand. So I’ve asked the institutions of Europe and its individuals, many times, not to abandon us and the process of equal justice for all. We want to be included in European standards and culture and not that of the Middle East or otherwise. Croatians are being treated in Banja Luka as second class citizens; no power to vote and they are without representation. Europe does not take these issues seriously but flip flops, meanwhile Turkey and Russia are meddling in the affairs of BiH, this is not good. BiH is to a great extent Europe’s problem and they have no political will to solve basic human rights issues. We want peace and the rule of law to apply to BiH’s citizens equally.  We don’t want the forces in BiH to explode again, so I’m also asking the US to help constructively.” Bishop Komarica also spoke at Harvard College in Cambridge Massachusetts at the JFK School of Government (Nov. 28th) regarding the above issues in BiH. His talk was moderated by John Carr who previously served for 20 years as director for an organization for justice and peace, of the Catholic Bishop Conference in the US.  The bishop also spoke at the Felician College (Fraciscan) in New Jersey (Dec. 1st),

Bishop Franjo Komarica has many credentials and accomplishments to show and speak of including: a doctorate in liturgy (1978) from the Catholic Theology institution in Sarajevo, he began a non for profit organization - Bishop Caritas (1986), Pope John Pope the 2nd pronounced him the Bishop of Banja Luka (1985), In 2004 he was nominated as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize., in 1997 he was awarded the “Heinrich  Pesch Preis”. These are some of his accomplishments.

komarica-1219124Bishop Franjo Komarica is being practical by building houses for those that are and have returned to Banja Luka, by repairing churches and creating opportunities for his constituents. He is after all a passionate, brilliant, gifted and balanced leader asking for help in solving complex problems and fighting for the marginalized, so as to improve the human condition for all. His visit to the institution of Harvard was made possible by his distant relative Dražen Komarica, a Harvard graduate (MPA -Masters of Public Administration) of the JFK School of Government. “The unsolved issues in BiH are on the back burner at this time in the public and political consciousness. As a recent graduate of the JFK School of Government the school asks of its graduates: “ask what you can do for the public good”. By bringing the issues of the Croatian minority in BiH to the forefront is a way to increase awareness and that in turn can do some good. I was also fortunate to receive a stipend from the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences (The Zlatko Baloković stipend) to attend this school for that I’m thankful and grateful,” said the young, bright and well spoken scholar. Dražen and Bishop Komarica visited and met with officials at the State Department (including the Congressional Caucus for Bosnia and Eastern Europe). The State Department said that they would help with democratic reforms and observe the treatment of those who are returning to the region.

The Bishop’s travel and lodging expenses were paid for by: Gavrilovic d.o.o., Jadranskog Naftovoda d.o.o., Arsenal Holdings d.o.o., and Ljubicic Transport.  If you wish to donate money or resources for the building of Croatian homes etc. in Banja Luka, e-mail Drazen at :  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
